Tony Williams Duffy Assembly Recounts

Yesterday the author Tony Williams came to talk about his books for our Duffy Hero Assembly.

We wrote a recount story about it and Mrs A wanted us to include our opinions and emotions about what we saw and heard.

Here are our best sentences:

Xyen: Right away you could tell he was crazy, weird!

Kingston: Kini and Tony were funny people!

Ashleigh: I was so excited about my books I just wanted to go right up to the stage and grab Room 3's books.

Maraea: I just wanted to spew up like a baby!

Teina: Oh my gosh! This man is crazy!

Josh: Yesterday it was very well done

Meagan: I saw a man sitting on the seats with a leather jacket and a mysterious hat.

Danielle: Tony shared some wonderful knowledge with us.

Aesha: When it was his turn to speak he jumped out of his chair!

Jessie L: He threw his jacket into the crowd.

Navuga: Tony Williams is a brave and weird man.

Juan: Tony Williams is funny and he made us laugh.

Isiah: First we sat down and Mr Greer introduced Tony Williams.

Kini: Suddenly Tony stopped and stared and I was like, WHAT?!

Jessie S: When Mr Greer introduced Tony Williams I thought he was crazy!

Maia: I loved it when Tony said that teachers brains were smaller than dinosaurs brains!

Rhys: I thought that he was going to say PIZAZZ and perform a new show when he leapt off the stage.

Jonathon: He was kinda weird, funny, hilarious and amusing.

Jameel: Tony stood up with his tummy leaning forward and said, "Sup Bro?"

Harley: When Kini went up he was hilarious like Tony Williams.

VJ: OMG we've got the coolest person coming to assembly!

Australia to build emu underpass!

We read an interesting article about emu underpasses on Kiwi Kids News today.  We discussed the new words we were introduced to in this article.  Here is what we decided they meant:

We decided after reading this article that we agree with the experts that this may not be the best idea as emus aren't the most intelligent birds!!

Story Endings with Mr Greer

Today Mrs A had an IEP meeting so she asked Mr Greer to do some real teaching for a change!  He came in and worked with us on writing effective story endings.  First we brainstormed about different types of endings we could have.

Mr Greer then gave us a story starter and we had to write the ending with a buddy.  Here are our results.

                                                            "The Birthday Party"

Today is my birthday. I am having a big party at my house. I invited everyone in my class. I hope that they all come.
My doorbells is ringing. I answer it. Three of my friends are at the door! The rest of my friends arrive. It is time for the party to begin. First, we play games. We play pin the tail on the donkey. Jasmine wins. My mum gives her a prize. She is very happy. I am happy that my friends are having fun. We also play tag and musical chairs.
Next, we eat cake. My favourite kind of cake is chocolate with vanilla icing. My mum made a special cake for me. She wrote "Happy Birthday" on it in red icing. Mum lights the candles. My friends sing the birthday song. I make a wish and blow out my candles.
Now it is time to open presents. Jack hands me the first present. I unwrap it and open the box...

and there was nothing. I said, "Awesome, a box! This is the best birthday ever!"
My friend Jasmine gave me a big present. I slowly unwrapped it and it was a helmet.
"A helmet?! You got me a helmet? You came to my birthday and you got me a helmet?! Not cool, girl. I would rather play with my box than this helmet!"

                                                                                                                           By Kini

It was dark inside. I really wanted it to be one of those teenage dolls, but instead it was a mud ball. Everyone laughed, but I didn't think it was funny. I unwrapped the next present. When I looked at it I said, "this is more like it!"
Everyone laughed again. It was a pair of indian shoes!

                                                                                                                           By Rhys

and I couldn't see anything because it was so dark. So I put my hand in the box and something gave me a cut! I tipped the box upside down and a dagger came out with a messaged tied on to it. The message had a code which said...

                                                                                                                           By VJ

Jack laughed at me as I slowly open the lid to the box. Water started to pour out of my eyes like a water fountain. I wanted a doll but not with its head chopped off or sauce on its hands!
Jack ran out of the door as fast as he could. I screamed so loud that nearly all of New Zealand could hear me!
The door-bell rang. I quickly went and answered the door. It was Jack. He tried talking to me but I just yelled at him. He slowly walked off feeling bad, but I did not want to hear about it.
Jack sat down and got out his scissors. He cut some wrapping paper and wrapped up the chocolate that was there, placing a bow on top.

                                                               "The Snow Day"

My sister woke me up early this morning. She ran into my room before the alarm clock went off.
"Look outside!" she yelled.
I got out of bed and looked out the window. All that I could see was white snow! There was a man shoveling the sidewalk in front of our house.
Mum came into the room. She brought us each a mug of hot chocolate.
"No school today!" she said. I was very happy. My sister was happy, too.
Mum left the room find our snow clothes. She gave me my blue snowsuit. She also gave me a hat and mittens.
"What are you going to do with no school?" she asked.

"I am going to have an adventure in the snow!"
"Okay" she replied. I put my clothes, my hat and my mittes on. I ran outside. I was going so fast I forgot our house was on a huge hill. Then all of a sudden I was rolling and rolling and rolling!
Suddendly I stopeed. I couldn't move! I realised I was in a huge snowman. I waited 30 seconds and I was getting really tired.
"Finally!" I said, as my sister came running outside. But she had forgotten that there was a huge hill under the house too. She came running and running and then,
"BAM!" she crashed into me.
"Oh, man! You broke my snow man!" I cried.
"Shutup. Atleast I saved you from that munted snow man"
"But I wanted to break it!"

Water Lillies

Our science experiment writing continues and today we experimented with paper water lillies.  Some of our hypotheses' were almost correct but we didn't guess that the petals would open out!  Here is a photo of our opened lillies.

Swirling Colour Change

We looked at how primary colours can mix together and make a secondary colour with a bit of a change.  We used a glass, water and food colouring to test our colour theories.  We also added some cooking oil to spice things up which led to some great discussion about different substances.

Here is a You Tube clip we got the idea from!

FUN WITH FOOD COLOURING! SWIRLING COLOUR CHANGE EXPERIMENT

Kaleidoscopic Milk

For writing at the moment we are learning how to write about simple science experiments.  We did one that is called Kaleidoscopic Milk.  We used food colouring, milk and dish washing liquid.  Here is a photo story showing the method and results.

Well done Kingston and Jessie for recording this experiment using the camera.

We then tried it again but used a cotton bud dipped in the dishwashing liquid after we saw it on You Tube!  Here are the photos.

Here is Jessie L's published experiment:

Kaleidoscopic Milk

Equipment:
Milk
 Food Colouring
Bowl
Dishwashing Liquid

Hypothesis:
I think it is going to explode.

Method:
1.Pour the milk into the bowl.
2. Drop the food colouring into the bowl.
3. Put some diswashing liquid in the bowl.

Conclusion:
It swirled like a tornado and the colours mixed together.  My hypothesis was wrong because it didn't explode.
